Main Screen - Storage Device List

When you open the app, it will give you a list of the storage devices found on your phone or tablet. On older devices, this will include SD cards and such, while most newer devices will just have the default Internal Storage. Some modern devices, such as Chromebooks, will still have SD cards available.

Where possible, the total size of the storage device will be shown, along with the total space used and available. In some cases, this may not yet be available (if the app doesn't have permission to access the storage device).

Simply tap to start scanning. If required, you will be asked for permission to access the device before it can start scanning. See Device Access for more information on permissions. You may also be asked for permission to access before writing files (deleting files, creating folders, or copying files)

The app will scan all the files and folders that it can find on the device. On the Internal Storage, this will include things such the Downloads folder, photos taken by the phone camera, and publicly accessible files created by apps (such as offline music files by Spotify and YouTube cache files). It does not include data stored privately by apps, such as Chrome user profiles. The size (but not contents) of private files can be analysed by those who purchase the Pro version.

When scanned, more detail is shown about how much is space is used. The small pie chart is divided into four sections:

  • The space measured by the successfully scanned files.

  • The additional overhead of files and folders. This is the folders themselves, and sections of storage that cannot be used because of files. On the Internal storage of modern devices, this will usually be very small. On SD cards, it can be quite significant if there are a large number of folders or small files.

  • Additional space which is reported to be used but is not accessible. On the Internal storage this will mostly be installed apps and their private data.

  • Free space still available on the storage device

I can't see one of my storage devices

Different manufacturers have very different locations for their storage devices. While the app tries to find all of them, it can't always manage it. On newer devices, this shouldn't be a problem due to how external storage devices are accessed - meaning they should always be visible to the app. But on older devices, this is not always the case.

If you can't see a storage device that you know should be available, you can try to find it by selecting "Choose Folders..." from the main menu. This gives a list of all the folders that the app can find and access on the device. Storage devices will usually be found under "storage" or "mnt", but could be located elsewhere.

Expert users and those using root access may also want to choose different folders to scan here. Note that Bold items indicate mount points, while italic items indicate folders which can't be accessed by the app (but there is some evidence of its existence).

My Internal Storage is full, but the app doesn't find much of it

On modern devices, a lot of space is taken by the installation and private files of installed applications. This means that the app can't, by default, find a lot of the files that are taking up space. Pro users can now scan all their installed applications. See the Applications help page for more information.

Storage Details

Selecting a storage device after scanning will show the full details of the files and folders found by the app. These can be viewed as a pie chart or a list

A key gives the details of the whole device (the same information as on the main screen), the current folder, and any selected files.

When viewing as a pie chart, it will be split into two sections. The outer section shows the breakdown of the size of the files and sub-folders in the currently selected folder, as a proportion of the total size of the current folder. The inner section shows the total size of the current folder as a proportion of the total space available.

When viewing as a list, the same information is shown in a different way. The background of each item (file or sub-folder) shows the size of that file or folder as a proportion of the current folder, while the bar graph shows the same information as the inner section of the pie chart.

Note that sub-folders are shown in yellow and individual files are shown in red.

You can select individual files or folders, or enter multi-select mode (long press a file or folder) for more options. When selecting a folder, you can move into the folder in the app, or open it in another app. When selecting a single file, you can open the file using the default app found for that file type (if known), or open it as a specific file type (such as image, video, etc).

Whenever any files or folders are selected, there is also the option to delete, cut, or copy. When selecting cut or copy, nothing immediately happens, but you may then paste to another location - either on the same storage device or another. In the case of cut and paste, the app will usually complete all copying before deleting any files. If there are any errors, it will not delete any of the files (including any that were copied successfully). If you choose "Quick move", the app will attempt to move everything using a single action. This is only available if the two folders are within the same storage device (and it may not always work - if it doesn't, nothing will happen and the user can attempt the normal method).

By default, sub-folders are shown before files, and they are sorted by size. You can change the settings to mix files and folders, and in list mode you can also sort by name.
